COVID-19 Update for Continuing and International Education Students

The University of Miami is closely monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic and will continue to provide regular updates as guidelines evolve. Please visit coronavirus.miami.edu for all University advisories and links to additional resources.

Students enrolled in a Division of Continuing and International Education program will be contacted either by phone or email with specific instructions. For more information, please refer to the details listed below:

Program Updates

  • Bachelor of General Studies, non-degree courses, and credit certificate programs

    For students enrolled in the Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.) program, non-degree courses, or credit certificate programs, the University has made decisions that will have an immediate impact on your class schedule:

    • Spring break is extended through March 22. Your classes will not be held during this time.
    • Classes will resume on March 23, but strictly in online/remote/distance learning environments through the remainder of the spring semester. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and will make a future decision regarding when in-person instruction may resume.
    • The University has launched an academic and business continuity site to assist faculty members and students in continuing their teaching and learning activities with minimal disruption.
    • Outside of course instruction, all University operations will continue as normal, and faculty and staff are expected to maintain their normal work schedules and activities.
    • Below, please find the updated course schedule for the Bachelor of General Studies and non-degree programming:
      • Current students, please call 305-284-2727 Monday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., extended advising hours are available Monday through Thursday via your Navigate.

  • Noncredit professional certificate programs

    For students enrolled in a noncredit, professional certificate programs, the University has made decisions that will have an immediate impact on your class schedule.

    Students enrolled in a professional certificate program have been contacted directly by phone and/or email with specific instructions regarding their program.

    All of the measures outlined above are intended to reduce the potential for the spread of the coronavirus and are in the interest of the safety of our University community. We recognize that these actions may be disruptive, but they are guided by the recommendations of leading health officials and by our priority to safeguard the health and well-being of our community.

  • Intensive English Program, Intensive Spanish Program, and custom language programs

    For students enrolled in the Intensive English (IEP) Program, Intensive Spanish Program, or customized language programs, the University has made decisions that will have an immediate impact on your class schedule.

    All students have been contacted directly by phone and/or email with specific instructions regarding their program.

    For IEP students:

    • Spring break is extended through March 22, 2020. Your classes will not be held during this time.
      • IEP classes will resume on Monday, March 23, 2020 and will be held online on Blackboard during the regular class days and times.
      • Your teacher will be on Blackboard at the regular class days and times, and they will take attendance. The same IEP attendance policy applies to these online courses:
        • 10 minutes or more late = .5 absence
        • Students need to maintain 85% attendance

       
    How can you prepare to take your classes online?

    • In a few days, the IEP staff will send you videos that will explain how to log into Blackboard and use the tools for your classes
    • You will need an iPad, tablet, laptop, or personal computer to connect to your IEP classes online (your cell phone is not recommended)
    • You will need an Internet connection for your personal computer or device
    • Faculty and staff will still be available to support you during business hours (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

       
    Classes will remain online on Blackboard through the remainder of the spring semester. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and will make a future decision regarding when in-person instruction may resume.

  • Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI at UM)

    The University has made decisions that will have an immediate impact on your class schedule:

    • Beginning on Monday, March 16, 2020, most OLLI at UM Spring 2 classes will meet online virtually through Zoom.
    • Additional information on OLLI at UM Summer classes will be shared at a later date.
    • All OLLI at UM clubs are cancelled until further notice.
    • A full list of online courses is here.
    • Classes will be held on your regularly scheduled day and time.
    • You will receive an email from your instructor prior to the beginning of class with instructions.

       
    If your class has been canceled, you may:

    • Attend another class - please email us at osher@miami.edu
    • Receive a partial refund for the remainder of the course. You do not need to contact us.

       
    For instructions on how to access your virtual, online class through Zoom, please refer to the information listed below:

    • Join the meeting from your computer (works best), tablet, or smartphone.
    • Download the application on your smartphone from your app store.
    • You will receive an email from your instructor and you can click on the meeting link or call the number indicated.
    • If you are new to Zoom, please get the app now to be ready when your first meeting starts.
    • Log in at least five minutes before the start of the class. Attendance will be taken during each class session.

       
    To ensure success in your online class, please:

    • Choose a quiet location that will allow you to focus solely on the class.
    • If you can purchase a headset, this can be useful to eliminate outside noise.
