Tentative Syllabus

Critically analyze games and sports stories as rhetorical artifacts. Evaluate messages of gender, race and ethnicity in sports. Explore issues of nationality and patriotism, culture and ethnicity as reflected in and perpetuated through sports. Recognize how sports communication builds community and identification.  Identify how communication theory relates to and helps explain sports communication topics. Describe the ways that identity functions in sport and recognize how identity manifests in fan behavior. Identify and discuss the role of commodification in sports. Recognize ways that commodification occurs in sports.

Study interview skills, listening techniques, voice, and articulation. Improve your verbal responses during a taped interview. Increase awareness of appropriate professional techniques in responding to interview questions and presenting yourself in public.
